Scissor Lift Info

Scissor lift machinery was one of the most innovated creations to come out of the twentieth century. Its invention enabled many tall structures to be erected with virtually minimal human effort. The following information is designed to provide the basic dynamics of the contributions attributed to this lift, also known as platform lift and lift table.

Who invented the lift? C and there is no definitive documentation to validate, or disprove, this credit. What is a real fact is that someone, or some ones, did construct this amazing creation in the 1960s when they were first seen.

What is a scissor lift? This piece of equipment elevates a flat platform above ground level, from a few feet up to sixty-two feet, and can handle from 500 to 12,000 pounds. It uses a linked criss-cross, X shape, also known as a pantograph, from a base of folding supports that draw together as it is stretched upward. For higher destinations, additional lifts can be attached one on top of another.

When is it used? A platform lift is employed when either people or materiel are needed in locations above ground level. An example of a simple platform lift is an emergency gurney that is raised to transport patients into and out of an ambulance. An example of a more complex lift is when one is used to transport construction beams and supplies many feet up.

Where is it used? A scissor lift is used for a wide variety of tasks. Examples of common usage is: a warehouse need to store and retrieve merchandise; hospital use of gurneys and the movement of medical machinery from operating to patient rooms; parts and publishing manufacturers needs for storing inventories; aircraft carriers and military organizations with needs to elevate extremely large machinery, weapons or cargo into containers; both perishable and non-perishable industries with needs to load and unload transportation vehicles.

Why use a scissor lift? A modern platform lift has the capability to raise and deliver heavy loads of materiel to an exact position with placing undue stress on dollies or personnel. The need to lift and store items or elevate individuals, supplies, or merchandise is long and ever growing. The availability to employ a scissor lift makes all those needs achievable with minimum effort.

How is a lift used? A platform lift can be operated by hydraulic cylinders that move the platform up and down. A pneumatic operation, using air bags, will also move the platform up and down. Regardless of which method of operation is employed, both ma y require no power to descent by the simple release of hydraulic or pneumatic pressure. This fail-safe process of getting the platform back to the ground level is the major reason that either of the two methods of operation is preferred.

The original idea for an elevation lifting machine that expanded using a raising, tightening, scissor style vise may remain an unanswered question to us today; but its evolution into the indispensable, modern multi-functional piece of equipment that every industry heavily, no pun intended, relies on today certainly goes without question. If necessity is the mother of invention; than elevation is the reason for a scissor lift.
